Its history involves successive rulings by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, and it was a major port on the east-west trade routes during that era. This ancient heritage reflects on the city today in terms of its architecture consisting of colonial buildings as well as high rise skyscrapers and shopping malls.
Negombo is one of the major city in Sri Lanka with an interesting history. Situated on the western coast and at the mouth of the Negombo Lagoon, in the Western Province, it is the fourth largest city in Sri Lanka and it is also the administrative capital center of the Negombo Division.
